Acumen Fund
Acumen Fund is a nonprofit venture fund that uses entrepreneurial approaches to solve the problems of global poverty, combining small amounts of philanthropic capital with large doses of business acumen to build thriving enterprises that serve vast numbers of the poor. Amy researched opportunities for social investing in Kenya. The Ball Foundation is a family-funded operating foundation dedicated to discovering and developing human potential. Through one of its major programs, Education Initiatives, the foundation supports the development of high-performing schools in partnership with urban school districts. Stephanie spent the summer conducting a broad industry study of the philanthropic sector, exploring various business models and making recommendations for possible future scenarios for the Education Initiatives program. Community and Conservation Investment Forum
The nonprofit Conservation and Community Investment Forum (CCIF) specializes in applying the tools, strategies, and capital sources of the private sector to address urgent conservation issues worldwide. Zoë (left) assessed the feasibility of conservation trust funds for protected areas networks in Cambodia and Indonesia, and contributed to the design of analytical tools that can be used in developing conservation finance strategies. Environmental Defense Fund's Oceans Program supports the development of a healthy fishing industry that embraces conservation measures, reducing bycatch and habitat damage. Kyle worked with several fishing communities in California to assess market demand and branding potential for sustainably caught seafood. Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin Counties
Goodwill is an autonomous social enterprise with a mission of creating solutions to poverty through workforce development, social action and environmental stewardship. Lindsay (left) is developing an integrated plan to maximize the value of Goodwill’s furniture donations - through repair, refurbishing and recycling - while minimizing the organization's landfill costs and environmental footprint. Anna (center) drafted a project plan for Goodwill’s long- and short-term facilities needs, a real estate decision-making framework that reflects the organization’s triple bottom line, as well as writing a business plan for the E-Commerce division. Jennifer (right) worked in the Marketing Department, developing a customer and donor engagement plan by analyzing revenue potential for various incentive programs. (Learn more about Goodwill.) The Grand Canyon Trust advocates collaborative, common-sense solutions to the significant problems affecting natural resources in the Grand Canyon region of northern Arizona and in the forests and red rock country of central and southern Utah. Jean worked on a variety of energy projects, including revising a renewable energy business plan for the Navajo community of Shonto, AZ. Headwaters Economics is an independent, nonprofit research group dedicated to improving community development and land management decisions in the West. Yang-Yang Chen worked on feasibility studies for biomass-to-energy projects in Southeast Alaska, which have acquired a new urgency as the cost of conventional energy continues to climb. Yang-Yang and Headwaters Economics Associate Director Ben Alexander traveled to Hoonah, Alaska for a meeting of the Tongass Futures Roundtable. (Learn more about Headwaters Economics+.) Living Cities is a philanthropic, corporate and public-sector partnership established to bring opportunities and the power of mainstream markets to urban neighborhoods and residents historically left behind. Jennifer (left) conducted a study of land acquisition loan funds related to affordable housing and transit-oriented development, and helped Living Cities begin to identify different roles it could play in this emerging field. The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Sustainable Seafood Initiative is helping to create a marketplace for sustainable seafood through work with consumers, suppliers and major buyers of seafood products. Carly, shown here just outside the Aquarium's offices, carried out an in-depth study of the seafood procurement structures and relationships of major seafood buyers. Her work has fed into the Sustainable Seafood Initiative program strategy and will help inform the broader marine conservation community, so that they can work more effectively within the existing business structures of their corporate partners. Rare is a fast-growing conservation organization that runs state-of-the-art communications and outreach projects in more than 40 countries. Rare provides training in social marketing to conservationists from around the world through university programs in the U.K., Mexico, China, and Indonesia, and is considering opening a new training site in the Francophone and/or Portuguese-speaking world. Jenny provided Rare with strategic assessments of both markets, in addition to conducting an on-site assessment of one of Rare's current university partnerships. (Learn more about Rare.)
